Bill Garrison and David Hughes of Garrison Hughes, who started their own firm after working together at Blattner Brunner, snagged five ADDYs and five Certificates
of Merit during the Pittsburgh Advertising Federation’s Annual ADDY Awards Ceremony tonight, for work created to promote organizations such as The Washington Wild Things, the Pittsburgh Passion and the Reed Smith law firm. They also took home the Judge’s Award of Excellence for a Point-of-Purchase display created on behalf of Fran’s Cards and Collectibles of East McKeesport. Winning the other high honor for the evening, a Judge’s Award for Art Direction, was Fredette & Associates, for its Mixed Media Campaign called, “Better Living Through Furniture,” created for funky Pittsburgh furniture store, Perlora.
Blattner Brunner, Pittsburgh’s third largest advertising agency, took home the most awards, garnering
12 ADDYs and 11 Certificates of Merit, for a variety of work done on behalf of the Greater Pittsburgh Convention and Visitors Bureau, Zippo, GlaxoSmithKline and others. The awards were presented this
evening during the Pittsburgh Advertising Federation’s Annual ADDY gala at Heinz Field.
The ADDYs recognize and reward the best advertising, electronic and graphic design and marketing materials produced by Pittsburgh advertising and marketing firms over the past year. Winners of the local competition may go on to the district and possibly the national competitions. The Federation’s Hall of Fame Awards, part of this celebration in years past, have been moved until later in the year, when a separate event will honor those who have helped create and shape the region’s advertising industry.
Other major winners in this year’s competition include: Ten United, winning four ADDYs and four Certificates for consumer magazine ads, TV and mixed media campaigns created for HJ Heinz and Supervalu; MARC USA/Pittsburgh winning three ADDYs and five Certificates – many coming for work created for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, as well as for Roberta Weissburg Leathers and Mohawk Industries; Mullen also received three ADDYs and five Certificates for its clients such as the United Jewish Federation, Point Park College (now University) and Boys and Girls Clubs of Western Pa.
Award winners were much more dispersed this year, according to David Case, president of PMI and president of the Pittsburgh Advertising Federation. “I’m glad to see the awards shared by a wider number of firms this year. That supports our belief that there is a tremendous amount of talent all across the Pittsburgh area, and ADDY judges recognized that.” There was also a significant increase in the number of award submissions this year, according to Case. “We had more than a 13% increase in the number of entries, as compared to last year. We think that’s a good sign that the local economy has turned the corner.”
This year’s ADDY judges were: Paul Brourman, a Pittsburgh native, who is now Senior Vice President and Group Creative Director, DDB Chicago; Jeff Linder, Executive Vice President and Creative Director, Della Femina, Rothschild, Jerry & Partners, New York; Dan O’Saben, Creative Director, the Hughes Group, St. Louis; Stephen Rogers, Executive Vice President, GKV Communications, Baltimore; and Don Sedei, Partner and Creative Director, Calise and Sedei, Dallas, who previously worked for Creamer, Inc., in Pittsburgh.
The Pittsburgh ADDY competition in the American Advertising Awards® is the first of a three-tiered national competition, sponsored annually by the American Advertising Federation (AAF). It is the industry’s largest and most representative competition for creative excellence. Categories include print, broadcast, interactive and mixed media, and local winners go on to the District Two Competition, which includes work from firms in Pennsylvania, Delaware, Washington, D.C., Maryland, New Jersey and Connecticut. District winners compete at the national level, which encompasses work from all 15 district competitions.
