PITTSBURGH – June 9, 2003 – Student teams from LaRoche College, Duquesne University and Point Park College presented their advertising campaign work, created for the national American Marketing Association and the American Advertising Federation student competitions – held in New Orleans and New York City respectively, to a local panel of judges on Thursday, June 12 at the First Annual Pittsburgh College Advertising Competition.
Duquesne and Point Park (the local winning team) participated in the American Advertising Federation’s competition and both created campaigns for Toyota. None of the local teams won at the national level but all made a strong showing for the Pittsburgh schools. LaRoche participated in the AMA’s competition, and created a comprehensive national advertising campaign for Pringles potato chips, as did all other entrants in that event.
“The national student competitions are tremendously rigorous and the students spend months preparing; the level of work is truly outstanding,” said Ed Flaherty, president of the Pittsburgh Advertising Federation and principal of Flaherty, Sabol Carroll. “We thought the local competition would be a great opportunity for the Pittsburgh ad community to see the ad talent being developed here in our schools – and for these young people to display their talents, given that many of them may end up applying for jobs at local agencies.”
The teams had an outstanding panel of judges to impress including Al Dudreck, former Chairman of DDF&M Advertising; Julie Smith, executive vice president of RJW Media; Adam Golomb, director of marketing for Eat ‘n Park Restaurants; Geoff Tolley, president, GBL, Inc., and Brian Bronaugh, senior vice president and creative director, Mullen.
